Take Note! Buzzcut Season by Lorde

Take note

I heard the song “Royals” right around the time that royal baby Prince George was born and I couldn’t get it out of my head.  (It is kind of still stuck in there!)   The song is from the debut studio album Pure Heroine by Lorde.   But in the spirit of actually doing what I said I was going to do with the “Take Note” series of posts, I purchased the album and listened to it from start to finish.  Surprisingly, the song that stuck out to me was not “Royals” but was the track called “Buzzcut Season.”  The keyboards at the beginning of the song immediately made me think of the music from Battlestar Galactica but the song quickly establishes its own identity.

“I remember when your head caught flame…”

The keyboard melody continues through the verses and anchors it nicely to a thumping bass line and some percussive drumming.  The song strikes me as being extremely dance-able with a driving beat topped with ethereal vocals.  I have a feeling that writing reviews is going to be difficult.  When I write restaurant reviews I am constantly wanting to use the word “delicious.”

Lorde is the stage name of a 16 year old girl from New Zealand.  Her real name is Ella Yelich-O’Connor.

“I started writing songs when I was 13 or 14, because I’ve always been a huge reader. My mum’s a poet and we’ve always had so many books, and that’s always been a big thing for me, arguably more so than music.”
 — Lorde speaking of her songwriting technique[3]

Take Note Reviews

Take note

“Take Note” is a new series of music reviews on rubycalling.com. The idea is that I will to listen to new music from start to finish and report back which song really stood out for me. I will also explain how I found the music in the first place.  Of course, the reviews are totally subjective and represent the song that caught my ear.  I am looking forward to introducing you to new music!  –Erin
